When Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister in 2015, he made a clear promise – he would end Canada’s long-standing shame of long-term drinking water advisories on First Nations reserves in five years, by March 2021.  March 2021 has come and gone. Communities like Neskantaga First Nation in Treaty Nine territory in Northern Ontario, which has been under Canada’s longest-running drinking water advisory for the last 25 years, are in crisis. Many have had to threaten court action to get Justin Trudeau’s government to the table. 

This is unacceptable. 

Jagmeet Singh has said that situations like those in Grassy Narrows or Neskantaga would never be allowed to happen in Toronto or Vancouver. Yet, a generation of children in First Nations communities had to grow up without clean water thanks to Liberal and Conservative negligence. 

While Justin Trudeau is willing to move mountains for his rich friends, he was happy to mock protestors demanding justice for Grassy Narrows and for an essential service most other people in this country have: clean drinking water. We need to send him a message he can’t ignore – add your name to tell Justin Trudeau to keep his promise and do whatever it takes to end drinking water advisories on reserves, immediately.
