Urgent solution needed for forgotten files in Buffalo

Thousands of immigrants waiting for permanent resident status must deal with psychological and financial stress

Nearly nine months have passed since the Conservative government abruptly closed the immigration office in Buffalo and transferred nearly 10,000 permanent residence applications to Ottawa. The long delays caused by this rash decision have had serious consequences for applicants. The NDP is urging the Conservatives to put an end to this ordeal and by quickly processing their files.

“These immigrants deserve clear and transparent information from the government on the status of their applications,” said NDP Immigration Critic, Jinny Sims. “Their applications must be made a priority and the government must provide additional resources so these people can finally obtain their permanent resident status. The government must deal with this serious blunder.”

The applicants are also facing particularly significant delays because of the Conservative government’s cuts to Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Some are now thinking about leaving the country and others have already left.

“The psychological and financial stress these people are dealing with is huge. They simply want answers from the government,” said Deputy Critic, Sadia Groguhé. “We need a comprehensive and fast solution.”
