Reality Check – Liberals block work to look into interference, violence by India
Last week, Canada learned from the RCMP that the Government of India is allegedly directing violent criminal activity on Canadian soil, against Canadian citizens. On Monday, the Liberal government voted to block the formation of a committee of elected officials to investigate and deal with the issue.
“Months ago, the Liberals fought tooth and nail to prevent an inquiry into foreign interference again. They slow-walked action and undermined efforts to get at the truth at every turn. And just a week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reveals in testimony that Conservative MPs and candidates are compromised, his party blocked efforts to deal with that bombshell,” said MP Alistair McGregor (Cowichan–Malahat–Langford), NDP critic for Justice and Public Safety.
“This is not a game. People have died, Canadian neighbourhoods have been terrorized and a foreign power has meddled in Canadian elections. It’s time to put partisanship aside and focus on Canadian security.”
The NDP’s proposal to establish a new committee on India, focused on protecting Canadians from foreign interference, mirrors an existing committee doing this work as it relates to China.
Meanwhile, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is still refusing to get the security clearance necessary to read which of his caucus members and candidates are wittingly or unwittingly working with India against Canada’s interests.
