Official Opposition statement on the Temporary Foreign Worker Program
NDP Employment and Social Development critic Jinny Sims (Newton— North Delta) made the following statement today after her motion on the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program was rejected:
“The Conservative government clearly has no intention of revamping this mismanaged program, despite its serious flaws.
“Today, the Conservatives refused to place a moratorium on hiring lower-skilled workers in all industries—including restaurant and other service sectors—as I proposed in my motion. They also rejected our call for a full investigation of the wider program by the Auditor General.
“Just days after bowing to heavy pressure for a moratorium on temporary foreign workers in fast food, the Conservatives revealed their true colors today by denying the deeper problems plaguing this program."
“Only a complete audit can restore Canadians’ trust in the TFW program, which has gone so completely off the rails under the Conservatives.
“This government needs to get serious about projecting Canadian jobs and crack down on employers who exploit this program in ways that penalize Canadians.
“New Democrats will keep fighting to fix what’s wrong with the Temporary Foreign Worker program and to get it working for all Canadians.”
