New Democrats call on Liberals to sign the TPNW
Jack Harris, NDP Critic for Foreign Affairs, made the following statement:
“Today, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons becomes international law, without Canada's signature.
While countries around the world celebrate the treaty's coming-to-force, New Democrats once again call out the Liberal government’s failure to take bold action on nuclear disarmament.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is a bold step towards peace and security. It is a vision for what could be and a commitment to working toward that end. A nuclear-weapon-free world is possible, but it requires courageous action by leaders and countries, like Canada. Unfortunately, the Liberal government has failed so far to take that step.
So again, New Democrats call on the Liberal government to participate in this leadership role on disarmament and to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.”
