NDP's Masse secures investigation into X over privacy concerns

OTTAWA – On Wednesday, NDP MP Brian Masse (Windsor West) secured an investigation with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada into whether the social media platform X complies with Canadian privacy laws. There are concerns around X potentially using Canadians' data to train artificial intelligence to influence their political decisions.

“I’m pleased to see the privacy commissioner agree to launch an investigation into X’s use of Canadians' data,” said Masse. “Transparency and sunlight are crucial at a time when algorithms could be manipulated to spread misinformation. Canadians have a right to know if and how their personal data is being used.”

Masse wrote to the commissioner earlier in the week calling for an investigation after X’s owner, billionaire Elon Musk, used the platform to campaign for his preferred political candidates and agreed with the idea of Canada being a 51st state.

“As Liberals and Conservatives sit back and let billionaires do whatever they want, New Democrats are taking action to hold them accountable,” added Masse.
