NDP statement on Speaker election
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:
“On behalf of all New Democrats, I want to congratulate Greg Fergus who has been elected as the first Black Canadian to hold the role of Speaker in the House of Commons.
We know he has served his constituents of Hull-Aylmer with pride since 2015. And I have always appreciated his warm “hellos” around the Hill and his desire to work for the good of Canadians instead of playing partisan, political games. The work Mr. Fergus has done with seniors is particularly noteworthy and admirable.
This is a special position and racialized Canadians across the country can take pride that Mr. Fergus is the first person of colour to hold the role of speaker. We know how important this is for young kids who visit our Parliament and haven’t always seem themselves reflected in the make-up of the House of Commons. Its incredibly meaningful to kids across the country who see a Black Canadian holding this vital role.
While this election comes at a time when there is increased attention on this House, there is increased attention on all our actions as parliamentarians. And we all have a role to play in living up to the enormous trust Canadians put in us; I know Mr. Fergus will take this seriously.
We’re all looking forward to Mr. Fergus working to restore the prestige and honour as our collective spokesperson and non-partisan referee.”
