NDP Statement on the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:
"Today, we remember the millions of victims of the transatlantic slave trade who were forcibly removed from their homes and forced to work for slave owners in cruel and inhumane conditions. Many would never even make it to the harsh new world, dying on slave ships during the horrific ocean passage.
On this International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, let us recognize this dark era in modern history and pay tribute to the slaves, abolitionists, and all those who worked to abolish slavery around the world in the face of grave danger and adversity.
Let us also be reminded of the lingering racism and prejudice that continue to impact the descendants of the victims of slavery, and commit to never letting such inhumane actions happen ever again."
