NDP Statement on Holodomor Memorial Day
Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:
“Today, Canadians pause to remember the millions of Ukrainian children, women and men who suffered and died by forced starvation under Joseph Stalin’s totalitarian Soviet regime in the early 1930s.
The Ukrainian people were condemned to terrible deaths because of their aspiration for independence and their desire to maintain their culture, traditions and language.
Following decades of Soviet control, the Ukrainian nation persevered and in 1991, won their independence.
On Holodomor Memorial Day, let us remember the victims and honour the survivors for having the courage to share their story. Let us strengthen our commitment to ensuring that these atrocities never happen again.”
