NDP Statement on Canada Day
Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:
“Today, New Democrats join Canadians everywhere in celebrating Canada’s 151st anniversary.
This celebration is an opportunity for friends and family to come together, enjoy the outdoors and time spent with loved ones.
It’s a day to remind ourselves of our shared values of diversity and inclusivity – core pillars that Canadians from coast to coast to coast take great pride in. It’s also a day to remind ourselves that we’re all in this together, and that when we take care of our fellow Canadians, we help lift everyone up.
It’s also an important opportunity to acknowledge the work we have ahead of us to continue building a more just and inclusive society.
Part of that, is remembering that this day is a difficult anniversary for Indigenous Peoples in Canada, as it is a celebration of the formal displacement of the first people of this land.
We cannot mark this day without a solemn and respectful acknowledgement of our history, if we are to truly move towards reconciliation and justice.
On this Canada Day, let us celebrate the values we continuously aim to aspire to, while remembering the past and committing to working for a brighter future for all.
Let us come together to build a fairer and more prosperous Canada for our children and grandchildren. Let’s work to protect our environment, defend the vulnerable, and reduce inequality, so that we all rise together.
On behalf of all New Democrats, I wish you and your family a fun and happy Canada Day.”
