NDP MP McPherson calls on Liberals to designate the Wagner Group as a terrorist entity
OTTAWA — On Monday, NDP MP Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona) will call on the Liberal government to designate the Wagner Group, a Russian-supported private military company, as a terrorist entity. McPherson is raising the motion in the House of Commons in response to the Wagner Group’s brutal attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilians in other parts of the world.
“The Wagner Group threatens international security, civilian life and democracy. The government must do the right thing and hold them accountable,” said McPherson. “They have committed unspeakable war crimes and need to be designated as a terrorist entity to deter countries and others from engaging with the group to commit more atrocities.”
The Wagner Group, a private military company owned by Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin, is known for its horrific tactics in conflict zones including Ukraine, Syria, and Mail. Last week, the United States declared the Wagner Group a transnational criminal organization. Now, New Democrats, through McPherson’s motion for unanimous consent, will be calling on all parties to designate the group as a terrorist entity.
“The increase in private military companies engaging in acts of terrorism is concerning. Putin is using the Wagner Group to commit horrific atrocities in Ukraine, and New Democrats expect all parties to support this motion,” said McPherson. “The government needs to do everything possible to protect Ukrainians and all civilians from the terrorism of the Wagner Group.”
