NDP Launches Week of Events Slamming Liberals’ Failure to Protect Farmers and Producers
BURNABY – With Members of Parliament spending this week back in their ridings, the NDP is hammering the government for failing to protect Canada’s supply management system for dairy, poultry, and eggs. The Liberals made major concessions on supply management in negotiating the new USMCA that will have serious negative impacts on farmers and dairy producers across Canada.
“Once again the Liberals have given up another critical protection for Canada’s farmers and producers,” said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, referring to supply management concessions the Liberals have made in three recent trade deals, USMCA, TPP and CETA. “We’re going to start seeing families lose their farms, major hits to rural communities, and the undermining of our high-quality, safe, and locally produced food.”
While farmers are still waiting for compensation following these multiple concessions, the NDP is kicking off a week of events on supply management starting Tuesday in Cobble Hill, British Columbia, where the NDP Leader and NDP Critic for Agriculture, Alistair MacGregor, will host a Town Hall meeting. The week will end in Montreal on Sunday, November 18 with the event “Garde manger en danger” where NDP MPs will walk with Quebecers to defend and support Quebec’s agriculture.
“Three times the Liberal government had a chance to protect our supply management system, and three times they failed. They approved trade deals that opened up more than 10% of our dairy market,” added MacGregor. “The effects of these policies are real, and hard working families are feeling betrayed. The NDP will stand up for farmers and producers who provide huge benefits to our local economies, and produce high quality and safe local food.”
This week, the following NDP MPs will host events throughout the country:
Guy Caron, Rimouski-Neigette – Témiscouata – Les Basques
Alistair MacGregor, Cowichan – Malahat – Langford
Brigitte Sansoucy, Saint-Hyacinthe – Bagot
Anne Minh Thu Quach, Salaberry – Suroît
Robert Aubin, Trois-Rivières
Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Berthier – Maskinongé
Christine Moore, Abitibi – Témiscamingue
