NDP Condemns Russian Actions Against Ukraine
Hélène Laverdière, NDP Foreign Affairs Critic, and Linda Duncan, NDP MP for Edmonton Strathcona, issued the following statement:
"The NDP unequivocally condemns in the strongest of terms the capture of three Ukrainian ships off of the Crimean coast on November 26, 2018. Between three and six Ukrainians were injured in the incident and approximately 20 Ukrainian sailors were taken into Russian custody.
While the Liberal government has already condemned Russia’s actions in a statement, they should follow their words with action to stand up for Ukrainian sovereignty and international law.
We call on the government to do more for the safe release of all sailors captured by Russia, as well as all political prisoners. Canada must also respond to these provocative actions by strengthening its sanctions against Russia.
We remain concerned that amid increasing tensions and the decision by Ukraine to impose martial law in regions bordering Russia, this could lead to more human rights violations and threaten the integrity of the upcoming elections. Canada must step forward to support Ukrainians in the coming elections to ensure election monitoring supports a fair and open election in the wake of responses to these aggressive actions."
