NDP calls on Canada to impose sanctions on Azerbaijani officials following attack on Nagorno-Karabakh
OTTAWA - On Friday, NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson (Edmonton Stratchona) and Alexandre Boulerice (Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie), wrote to Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly to ask Canada to impose sanctions on Azerbaijani officials responsible for attacks on Nagorno-Karabakh.
Earlier this week Azerbaijan launched an aggressive military attack on the 120,000 residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, killing hundreds and wounding many more. Many residents left their homes to find safety. International experts have argued this attack is an attempt by Azerbaijan to ethnically cleanse the region, which would be a most serious violation of international law.
“Canada needs to be a leader in upholding human rights and justice worldwide,” said McPherson. “We’re calling on the government to take immediate action and diplomatic steps to save people’s lives.”
