NDP backs calls for federal funding for the Gatineau-Ottawa tramway
OTTAWA — On Thursday, the NDP joined MOBI-O, an advocacy group for sustainable transportation solutions in the Gatineau region, in calling on the Liberal government to release federal funding to build the Ottawa-Gatineau tramway project.
NDP House Leader Peter Julian says that the Trudeau government must put their money where their mouth is when it comes to investments in green projects such as this one.
“The Liberals talk a great deal when it comes to investing in green and sustainable initiatives, but they stall when asked to put their money where their mouth is,” said Julian. “The Ottawa-Gatineau tramway is a sustainable, affordable, and green project that will facilitate mobility for residents. The Liberals should be backing this project with the funding needed to build it.”
The NDP was also joined by MPs from other parties, local municipal and provincial elected officials who want to see this project move forward. Julian added that this is the kind of project the federal government should be supporting in a heartbeat if fighting the climate crisis was really their priority.
“The Ottawa-Gatineau tramway will reduce traffic and improve public transportation for the local community,” added Julian. “It's good for people and for the environment. We need federal funding to focus on projects such as this one. This would be the time for the Liberals to show if they are really serious about tackling the climate crisis.”
