Liberals need to make serious investments in clean energy

In the Liberals' upcoming budget this week, they must invest in energy workers to create a truly Canadian clean energy revolution

OTTAWA – Today, NDP Natural Resources Critic Charlie Angus (Timmins–James Bay) is calling on the Liberal government to change direction and invest in green energy and in worker development. New Democrats have been raising alarm bells about how the Liberal government's supposed plan to reduce emissions is failing to fight the climate crisis and is abandoning workers.

"The Liberal government is giving billions to the oil lobby to increase oil production. Public money should be used to tap the creativity of energy workers to create a truly Canadian clean energy revolution," said Angus. "This week's budget is an opportunity to invest in workers. Canadian workers have the skills needed. But the Liberal government has broken every single climate promise they've made. The clock is ticking, the planet is burning, and the window of opportunity is rapidly closing."

In this week's budget, New Democrats are looking for the Liberal government to invest in green energy and in worker development. The NDP is also asking the government to start eliminating fossil fuel subsidies to big oil.

"For the last 7 years, instead of phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, the Liberals increased them and handed out billions to profitable big oil and gas companies. And for 7 years, the Liberal government has kept workers waiting. Waiting for any news or investments to tap into their skills towards a green energy future," added Angus. "Climate delay won’t cut it; we must act now. The upcoming budget will be an important opportunity for the government to show that it takes the climate emergency seriously."
