Jagmeet wants a budget that lowers costs for Canadians and tackles corporate greed

OTTAWA – On Monday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh laid out his party’s expectation for the budget. New Democrats are fighting for a budget that will lower costs for Canadians and make giant corporations pay what they owe.

“Canadians are having a tough time. It’s harder to pay the rent, the mortgage, buy food, and pay the bills. But big corporations and wealthy CEOs are doing better than ever,” said Singh. “Profits are up because when you pay more, they make more. Whether it’s big grocery CEOs, big oil and gas companies, corporate landlords or big telcos – the results are the same. Life is harder for you and easier for them; it doesn't have to be this way.”

Just across the border, President Biden committed to make large corporations pay what they owe by increasing the corporate tax rate from 21 per cent to 28 per cent and reinvesting that money in people.

Reversing a part of Pierre Poilievre’s corporate handout by increasing Canada’s corporate tax rate would recoup billions a year. New Democrats want to put that money back in people’s pocket with a permanent grocery rebate, a permanent rental benefit to help people pay their rent, reversing cuts and additional investment in Indigenous services, and funding to help people switch to heat pumps to lower their energy bill.

“Pierre Poilievre has been clear he doesn’t want you to have dental care, your kid to have food at school or the federal government to invest in public healthcare, but he is okay with wealthy corporations getting richer and richer,” said Singh. “In this budget, we are fighting to lower the cost for Canadians, make giant corporations pay what they owe and tackle corporate greed. One way the government can make giant corporations pay what they owe is by reversing Poilievre’s $60 billion handouts.”
