Jagmeet Singh fighting for people in Quebec

MONTREAL – Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made a stop in Montreal to talk about how the NDP will continue to fight for the issues that Quebecers care about. From the housing crisis to the climate crisis, people in Quebec are worried about what the future will hold. And the pandemic has only made matters worse for workers, seniors, young people, and families struggling to make ends meet.

“The cost of housing is exploding, the cost of groceries is going up — people are finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet,” said Singh. “Over the past six years Justin Trudeau has made a lot of promises to people in Quebec on things like taking bold action on the climate crisis or bringing in a pharmacare plan. But repeatedly, the Liberal government has broken their promise. People deserve someone who will fight for them. The NDP will fight for you.”

Since the Liberals came to power, Quebec families have faced the onslaught of renovictions and ballooning rent prices. In fact, $2225 a month in rent for families in Montreal is considered affordable under Justin Trudeau. This shows how Justin Trudeau and his Montreal Liberal Members of Parliament are out of touch with the reality of Quebecers. And when it comes to the climate crisis, Justin Trudeau refuses to take a clear stand against federally funding the 3rd link and to eliminate all fossil fuel subsidies by the end of 2022.

“Whether it’s help for people or getting serious about the climate crisis, the Liberals prefer to make things easier for the ultra-rich instead of easier for those who are struggling to make ends meet,” added Singh. “Quebecers need a government on their side to help them face the crises they’re living through like the pandemic, the climate crisis and the housing crisis. The housing crisis is keeping people from finding a home they can afford, and the impacts of the climate crisis are devastating. People need leadership on these matters. No more delays. Quebecers can count on New Democrats to keep fighting for them.”
