Jagmeet Singh calls for bolder action on the fight against climate change

OTTAWA – Today, Jagmeet Singh spoke about the urgent need for real leadership on tackling the climate crisis. Next week, world leaders will meet at COP26 to work on solutions to climate change. Singh says this is a chance for Justin Trudeau to prove to Canadians that he's serious about fighting climate change and take real actions to make a difference.

“The climate crisis is putting everything we value at risk. In the past year, we’ve seen parts of the country on fire, people haven’t been able to breathe the air, and the extreme heat cost Canadians their lives. Mr. Trudeau pretends to be a climate leader but continues to give big oil and gas companies billions in fossil fuel subsidies,” said Singh. “Next week’s conference is an opportunity for Justin Trudeau to show he is serious about addressing climate change in a real, measurable way.”

Since Trudeau was elected in 2015, Canada’s emissions have gone up almost every year and Canada has become the third biggest polluter in the OECD. Canadians cannot afford more inaction on climate change from this Liberal government.

“Justin Trudeau has a chance to go beyond empty words and actually get Canada back on track,” said Singh."He can take real steps by going to COP26 with a new emission reduction target of at least 50 per cent, a commitment to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and a plan that supports workers and communities impacted by the fight against climate change.”

Jagmeet Singh will also attend COP26 where he’ll advance the concerns of millions of Canadians who are calling for bolder action on the climate crisis.
