Jagmeet Singh and Craig Sauvé put up signs in byelection focused on cost of living

MONTRÉAL– On Monday, Canada’s NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was in Montreal to put up the first campaign signs with the NDP candidate for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun Craig Sauvé as the byelection kicks off.

Singh says in this byelection, Montrealers will have an important choice to make: join Craig Sauvé and the NDP’s fight to lower grocery prices and lower rent or help Justin Trudeau’s Liberals protect corporate profits.

“I believe your hard work should earn you a good life. You should be able to pay the bills and rent, and still save for vacations and rainy days,” said Singh. “People in LaSalle-Émard-Verdun are working harder than ever but are falling behind. It’s not your fault. Every time you go to the store or open a bill, you get ripped off. Everything costs more. Groceries, rent, gas. Meanwhile, big business is making record profits.

“You're getting ripped off and Justin Trudeau is letting it slide because he protects CEOs instead of you. He promised to make things better, he's made them worse. It's wrong and it’s time to change the rules to favour everyday people, for once.”

Under nine years of Justin Trudeau, the cost for rent in LaSalle-Émard-Verdun have gone up 44 per cent and grocery prices increased by 20 per cent. Sauvé said his focus will be on fighting corporate greed with concrete proposals to slice grocery prices, lower rent and outlaw gouging.

“In this byelection, people have a choice,” said Sauvé. “Support Justin Trudeau's Liberals, who are letting you down by refusing to stand up to big business. Or join me and the NDP, who will fight to make your grocery prices and rent more affordable. In this byelection, people have the chance to send a clear message that the status quo is hurting us all.”
