Our plan to tackle skyrocketing rent prices and end the exploitative power of predatory corporate landlords

Across Canada, rent prices have more than doubled since 2015. In January 2025, the average asking rent hit $2,033/month in Halifax.

This wasn’t an accident. It’s by design. Our system is rigged in the favour of wealthy corporate landlords, letting them exploit hardworking Canadians at every turn through predatory practices like fixed-term leases, renovictions, and price-fixing.

New Democrats understand that having a home you can afford isn’t a luxury—it’s a right. Nobody should lose their home because their landlord wants to double the rent.

We’re already fighting to build rent-controlled homes on federal land and ban corporate landlords from buying up affordable home. Now, we have a plan to end landlord money grabs and protect renters from unfair and unreasonable rent increases.

We’re ready to:

• Implement national rent control;
• Ban fixed-term leases, renovictions, demovictions, and other landlord practices aimed at pushing people out of their homes and driving up rents;
• Ban rent price-fixing and collusion by corporate landlords, including the use of shared data platforms and coordinated pricing tools; and
• Recognize the right of tenant unions to negotiate with landlords.

We will do this by introducing a Renters’ Bill of Rights and tying federal housing funding incentives to tenant-protector policies. The Housing Accelerator Fund, for instance, already provides incentive funding to local government to encourage the removal of barriers to housing supply, tying funding delivery to rule changes in these areas of jurisdiction.

New Democrats will also expand the Canada Rental Protection Fund to $4 billion to help non-profit housing providers buy affordable rental homes and keep them out of the hands of corporate landlords.

Wealthy corporate landlords have held the cards for too long. It’s well past time that our leaders give power back the hardworking Canadians just looking for a place to call home.
