NDP triples membership ahead of leadership vote
OTTAWA – The NDP is proud to announce that more than 124,000 members will be eligible to vote in its leadership race. This figure represents a three-fold increase from the 41,000 who were members at the end of March 2017.
"It’s a very exciting time for the NDP. The fact that so many new members joined – and so many renewed members came back – shows there’s lots of enthusiasm around our leadership race,” said Federal NDP President Marit Stiles. “The Party and the four candidates continue to make tremendous efforts to mobilize and engage supporters – and the results are starting to show. We’re confident this momentum will continue to grow as we launch our new leader in October."
In order to be on the final electoral list, members had to join before August 17. Eligible voters will receive their voting package in the mail in early September.
The next and last official leadership debate will take place in Vancouver on September 10. The Leadership 2017 Showcase, where each candidate will make a final appeal for support before voting begins, will take place in Hamilton on September 17.
Online voting starts on September 18 and results announcement events will be held after each round of balloting, every Sunday of October until a new leader is elected. The first ballot results announcement event will take place on October 1, at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, the second and third round results announcements would take place in Montreal on October 8 and in Ottawa on October 15.
