Public transit on Montreal island will be a priority for an NDP government

True to his past commitments, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says that a New Democrat government will develop a national public transit strategy enabling the Island of Montreal to develop its network and economy.

“Whether we’re talking about the eastbound train or extending the subway, projects are not lacking in the Montreal region. But projects need funding and the federal government has to take out its cheque book and work with provinces and municipalities to make this a reality,” said Mulcair.

Canada needs a national public transit strategy to provide adequate and sustainable funding to provincial and municipal partners. This would allow them to begin attacking the $123 billion infrastructure deficit, according to a study by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

“We must do something to reduce traffic, and public transit is the logical response to an economic and environmental problem,” said Stéphane Moraille, the NDP’s candidate in Bourassa. “It’s not normal that a worker in Bourassa who lives in downtown Montreal has to spend more than an hour in transit to get to work.”
