NDP statement on the beginning of Ramadan

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair made the following statement:

"On behalf of New Democrats, I would like to extend my best wishes to Muslims across Canada and around the world.

The holy month of Ramadan is a time dedicated to prayer, dawn-to-dusk fasting, personal reflection, and good deeds. It is also a time of celebration among family and friends.

New Democrats are proud of our strong relationship with Muslim communities across the country and of the many positive contributions Canadian Muslims make to our society.

During this month of reflection, we also think of those Muslims who have been affected by poverty and conflict around the world – including many of the millions of Syrians who have been displaced and may be apart from family during Ramadan.

New Democrats remain committed to defending human rights in Canada and around the world and to fighting against racism and Islamophobia. We must work together to build a fairer, more inclusive, and peaceful world.
