NDP calls for mandatory labelling of genetically modified foods
OTTAWA — New Democrat MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault (Sherbrooke) tabled Bill C-291 this morning calling for the mandatory labelling of genetically modified (GM) foods.
Several organizations from diverse backgrounds, including Canadian Organic Growers, Organic Trade Organization and Union paysanne, were there to offer their support for Dusseault's bill.
"I'm pleased that so many people support my bill. It reflects the importance that Canadians place on the right to information," said Dusseault.
More than 65 jurisdictions – including neighboring state Vermont – have made the labelling of GM foods mandatory. For ten years, surveys have shown that nearly 90% of Canadians support the labelling of GM foods. Health Canada's report on food labelling indicates that Canadians want the government to take concrete measures to ensure that GM foods are labelled.
"The NDP has been calling for years for a law making the labelling of GM foods mandatory. The Liberal government must allow Canadians to obtain as much information as possible on GM foods. To date, the Liberal government has refused to take action," said Dusseault.
Dusseault invites all Canadians to sign the online petition. "The NDP believes that Canadians have the right to choose what they put on their plates and to do so, they need full information," concluded the MP for Sherbrooke.
