Conservatives refuse to support NDP motion to eliminate child poverty

The Conservatives have refused to support an NDP motion urging MPs to recommit to eliminating child poverty.

“We are a prosperous country, but with more and more Canadian children living in poverty, we were hoping to get unanimous consent for this important motion. It is disappointing that the Conservatives chose not to support it,” said NDP Deputy Leader Megan Leslie (Halifax).

Twenty-five years after the unanimous adoption of former NDP leader Ed Broadbent’s motion to end child poverty, the NDP introduced a motion urging MPs to recommit to that goal.

“New Democrats are just as committed to eliminating child poverty today as we were 25 years ago. We will continue working to build a Canada where everyone has equal opportunity and no one is left behind,” said NDP critic for Employment and Social Development Jinny Sims (Newton – North Delta).
